Hana Matsuri (Brooklyn Botanical Garden)

We visited the annual Cherry Blossom Festival at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, where all things Japanese are celebrated, including Cos Play and kimonos. Unfortunately the cherry blossoms were only just beginning.

Besides stills, I also shot some brief video segments at Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes State Park with my new Nikon D800E. I didn’t have a tripod with me, so the framing is a bit shakey, but pretty good considering how briskly the wind was blowing. I edited in iMovie and slowed down the blowing sand by 50%. The music is Yo La Tengo’s Tears Are in Your Eyes. Click the image to play the video in a popup.

This gorgeous time-lapse video starts in the dark of the Gulf of Mexico and flies by the night lights of Florida, DC, NYC, and up past Newfoundland. At the end, you are rewarded with the green dance of the Aurora Borealis. Warning: loading the video takes about 30 seconds. See lots more here.
Oceano Dunes

This is one of my favorite parks in Central California. Soft sand, amazing panoramas, and it feels like an Edward Weston photo is just a click away.

Oceano Dunes is a fantastic state park. You can get the feeling of infinity (until you notice the cars driving on the adjacent beach). It was here that part of the Ten Commandments were filmed and photographers, including Ansel Adams and Edward Weston, made some iconic black and white imagery. The best time to visit would be at sunrise when the shadows are long and the night winds have had a chance to erase the assault of daily footprints. I can’t wait to go back.

Sunset (101, near Santa Barbara)

As Irene approached NYC, we’d flown in to 108-degree Burbank and drove up 101 to Santa Maria and experienced this fantastic sunset near Santa Barbara.

Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 1
04.04.10 | 23:39 •

In mid-March, Bloomberg et al commemorated the first part of the Brooklyn Heights new park known as Brooklyn Bridge Park. Formerly a bunch of abanoned docks and warehouses, this land that borders the last part of the East River is now verdant and hiply designed. The first part, Pier 1, is open to the public. Other adjacent piers are being converted and should be open by summer. Read more about the plans here.

Gowanus Canal Designated Superfund Site
02.03.10 | 15:10 •

The EPA did the right thing, naming the polluted Gowanus a SuperFund site. According to this NYT article, the cleanup could take 10-12 years and cost $300-500 million. Bloomberg and company were very disappointed, no doubt upset about the prospects for crony real estate development. Next up should be the Superfund labeling of the terrible oil spill under Greenpoint, one of the worst domestic oil spills (even bigger than the Exxon Valdez).
